INTEL'S XEON 5500-SERIES PROCESSOR launch saw servers packed with more system throughput (via the QuickPath Interconnect and PCI Express 2.0) and memory bandwidth (thanks to a triple-channel integrated controller) than ever before. Suddenly, resellers are now facing a brand new bottleneck: storage performance.

If you’re building modern servers, make sure you’re including capable storage subsystems in an effort to maximize performance. LSI’s MegaRAID SAS 9260-4i is one of the first few controllers supporting 6 Gb/s SAS hard drives, doubling the previous generation’s peak 3 Gb/s per port. It drops into a x8 PCI Express 2.0 slot able to move an astounding 4 GB/s of data. As you might imagine, with just those four ports, one controller card can drive an entire JBOD laden with drives and still have performance to spare.

In addition to the cutting-edge standards on which it centers, LSI arms the MegaRAID SAS 9260-4i with its own 800 MHz RAID-on-chip PowerPC-based processor and 512MB cache of DDR2-800 memory. The two components work together, offloading storage calculations, depending on the configuration your customer builds (LSI supports RAID 0, 1, 5, and 6 arrays).
