Electronic File Specifications

Ad materials should be submitted in PDF/X1A Vector format

Prefered Materials:

PDF/X-1A ( Vector ), all fonts and images embedded.
We define PDF/X1A Vector as a PDF that was generated on a Mac or PC layout application ( InDesign®, Quark™ or Illustrator® ) printed to a Postscript file, and distilled into a PDF file.
We do NOT aceept PDF/X1A Raster files.

Preparing Application files for PDF:
In order to generate printable PDFs, it is important that the native
file; Adobe InDesign®, Adobe Illustrator® or Quark XPress™ is prepared accordingly.

Page Size

  • Double check you are using the correct page size.
  • Build pages as right-reading portrait, 100% size, no rotation.

Bleeds and Marks

  • Set bleeds to .25" beyond trim on all 4 sides.
  • Set crop and register marks offset to .50". This enusures that marks will NOT enter the “bleed" area.
  • Include standard trim, bleed and center marks .50" outside of the magazine trim size.
  • In “Document Setup" set a 1" slug at the bottom of the page, and place a GATF quality control color bar, which may be downloaded from here.

Images

  • Embed all Images.
  • Images must be SWOP CMYK, TIFF or EPS or JPEG, 300 dpi or higher.
  • Do NOT use RGB, OPI, or FPO images.
  • Do NOT embed EPS files into other EPS files.
  • Do NOT embed ICC Profiles within images.

Fonts

  • Embed all fonts
  • Use only Postscript T1 or OpenType OTF Fonts.
  • Do NOT “stylize" fonts or use font substitutions.
  • Do NOT use True Type TT fonts, or ensure TT fonts are converted to paths in the application.

PDF Creation Workflow

  • Our preferred Ad format is PDF-X1A ( Vector ). Generic “Press Quailty" PDFs are also acceptable.
  • Do NOT supply PDFs in PDF/X-1A ( Raster ) formats from Scitex PDF2Go or Adobe Photoshop® for example, as they will occasionally produce undesirable results.
  • Do NOT use the built-in PDF export function from InDesign® CS, Illustrator®, or QuarkXPress™. The built-in PDF engine can create PDFs with anomalies which occasionally will produce undesirable results.

Please read the “Preparing Application files for PDF" section before continuing.

4 Easy Steps TO PDF/X1A

Step 1: Set-up

  • Set InDesign®, Illustrator®, and QuarkXpress™ “Registration Marks Offset" to .50" and “Document and Bleed Settings" to .25" on all 4 sides. Confirm there is bleed.

Step 2: Print

  • Print page to a Postscript file ( .PS )

Step 3: Distill

  • Open Adobe Acrobat Distiller®, and select “PDF/X1A" or “Press Quality" job settings.
Drop PS file into Acrobat Distiller®, and process.

Step 4: Check PDF

  • Application files will be charged $100 per page for conversion
    to high-res PDF.
